1-1/2 yds. Backing Fabric
Batting
Cut 1 strip of turquoise 2" x 40"
Cut 4 strips of purple 2" x 40"
Cut 5 strips of lavender 2" x 40"
Place one strip turquoise and one strip lavender, horizontally, right
sides together. Offset top turquoise strip 2" to the left of bottom
strip. Sew strips together across the long edge. Open and press seam
to one side.
Place strip set on rotary cutting mat. Lay Diamond Cut ruler on width
of fabric, aligning bottom line of ruler with raw edge of fabric. Create
first angle by cutting along the outside right edge of ruler. Cut in
2, 4 and 6 slots. Lift ruler and reposition right edge of fabric with
right edge of ruler, aligning bottom edge of fabric with printed line
on ruler. Cut in 2, 4 and 6 slots. Continue until entire strip set has
been cut (need a total of 12 diamond sets).
Following above directions, including off-setting of strips, sew 4 strips
of lavender to 4 strips of purple with the lavender on top to create
two-piece diamonds (need a total of 60 diamond sets).
NOTE: When sewing following diamond sets together, offset seam edges
of fabric 1/4" that points of diamonds line up at center (figure
1).

Sew 12 two-piece turquoise diamond sets to 12 of the two-piece purple
diamond sets (figure 2). Sew remaining 48 two-piece purple diamond sets
together (figure 3). Clip dog-ears, and press seams to one side.

Sew 3 of the turquoise/purple four-piece sets together to create half
a star (figure 4). Press seams to one side. Sew two of the purple four-
piece sets to the half star (figure 5). Clip dog-ears and press seams.
Repeat to create a total of 4 such sets.

In the same manner as above, sew together 3 of the purple four piece
sets to create half a star (figure 6). Sew two of the purple four piece
sets to the half star (figure 7). Repeat to create a total of 2 such
sets. You will have two remaining purple half star sets.

Sew half star strip sets together (figure 8).

From lavender fabric, cut three strips 3-1/2" x 40". Place
fabric strips horizontally on rotary cutting mat. Lay Diamond Cut ruler
on width of fabric, aligning bottom line of ruler with raw edge of fabric.
Create first angle by cutting along the outside right edge of ruler.
Cut in 3-1/2"
slot. Lift ruler and reposition right edge of fabric with right edge
of ruler, aligning bottom edge of fabric with printed line on ruler.
Cut in 3-1/2" slot. Continue across width of fabric to create fourteen
3-1/2" diamonds. Sew into star pieced center (figure 9). Press seams.

From lavender fabric, cut four rectangles 3-1/2" x 5". Place
two rectangles right side up on rotary cutting mat. Lay Diamond Cut ruler
on 5" edge of fabric, aligning bottom line of ruler with edge of
fabric. Cut along the outside right edge of the ruler. Place two rectangles,
wrong side up on rotary cutting mat. In the same manner, cut angle on
right edge of fabric. Sew into four corners of pieced center (figure
10). Press seams.
Square all edges of pieced center, removing excess diamond from long
edges and leaving a 1/4" seam allowance on all sides. Pieced center
should measure 10-1/2" x 47", seam allowance included.
For inner border, cut two strips 1-1/2" x 47" and two strips
1-1/2" x 12-1/2". Sew 47"
inner border strips to long edges of pieced center. Press seams toward
inner border. Sew 12-1/2" inner border strips to ends of pieced
center.
For outer border, cut two strips 2-1/2" x 49" and two strips
2-1/2" x 16-12". Sew 49" outer border strips to long edges
of inner border. Press seams toward outer border. Sew 16-1/2" outer
border strips to ends of inner border.
Layer quilt top, batting and backing. Quilt as desired, square and bind. |
