Quilting Glossary:
RST = Right sides together
RSU = Right sides up
WOF = Width of fabric
Crosswise = Follow grain; fold fabric selvage to selvage and
cut across fold.
All cutting measurements include ¼” seam allowance.
Sew in ¼” seam allowance.
Follow order of the steps as listed under each fabric. Coming Home Lap Quilt Directions 53” x

Fabric B (blue) 1 1/3 yards
Fabric C (red check) 1 1/2 yards
Fabric D (tan) 1 1/2 yards
Backing fabric 3 1/2 yards
Cutting Directions (Cut crosswise unless stated)
Fabric B (blue) Cut (3) strips 3 7/8” wide, Cut (6) strips 2 ½” wide for binding. Fabric C (red check) Cut (4) strips 7” lengthwise for outer border. Fabric D (tan) Cut (2) strips 3 7/8” wide. Cut (4) strips 5” wide for inner border.
Making the Setting Blocks
Stitch a 3 7/8” blue and a 3 7/8” tan strip RST
on the long side of the strips; press seam toward blue. (Make
2 sets)
Sub-cut one strip set into (4) 3 7/8” segments. Place
the uncut strip set under the machine RSU with the tan color
under the needle (right-side).
Place the 3 7/8” segments over the un-cut strip set
with the blue square facing the top, on the right side of
the strip set RST. Stitch in place.
Do the same for all four segments (chain piecing).
Cut between segments to create (4) 2-patch strip units.
Place
the remaining blue 3 7/8” strip under the machine
RSU. Place the newly created 2-patch units RST with the longer
blue strip side facing the top side of strip. Stitch unit
to blue strip. Do the same for all four segments (chain piecing).
Cut in between units. Press towards blue strip. Blocks should
measure 10 ½”. Trim if necessary. You should
have 4 completed blocks.
Assembling the Quilt Top.
With RST and raw edges matched, stitch the blocks in each
row following quilt diagram layout. Press the seams in each
row in opposite directions. Pin the rows together at all
intersections of all seams. Stitch the rows together. Attaching Borders
Stitch inner border (tan) to both sides of quilt center.
Press seams toward border. Trim off excess length. Stitch
inner border (tan) to top and bottom of pieced quilt center.
Press seams toward border. Trim off excess length.
Stitch outer border (red check) to inner border (tan) in
the same manner. Press seams toward outer border. Trim off
excess length. Finishing
Layer quilt top, batting and backing. Quilt as desired. Bind.
