RST = Right sides together
RSU = Right sides up
WOF = Width of fabric
Crosswise = Follow grain; fold fabric selvage to selvage and
cut across fold.
All cutting measurements include ¼” seam allowance.
Sew in ¼” seam allowance.

Backing Fabric 6 yards Cutting Directions (cut crosswise unless stated)
Fabric A (red)
Cut (2) strips 11” wide, sub-cut into (4) 11” squares.
Cut (3) strips 3” wide.
Cut (9) strips 2 ½” wide for binding.
Fabric B (blue)
Cut (1) 5 7/8” wide, sub-cut into (4) 5 7/8” square.
Cut (4) strips 10 ½” lengthwise for outer border.
Fabric C (red check)
Cut (4) strips 5” wide lengthwise for middle border.
Fabric D (tan)
Cut (2) strips 11” wide, sub-cut into (4) 11” squares.
Cut (1) strip 5 7/8” wide, sub-cut into (4) 5 7/8” squares.
Cut (1) strip 5 ½” wide, sub-cut into (8) 5 ½” squares.
Cut (3) strips 3” wide.
Cut (6) strips 3” wide for inner border. Making the Setting Blocks (Half Square)
Place an 11” tan square on top of a red square RST.
Mark a diagonal line from one corner to the opposite corner
on the tan square. Stitch ¼” on both sides of
the diagonal line. Cut square apart on the diagonal line.
Press seam towards red side. Make a total of (8) blocks.
Trim down to 10 ½” x 10 ½”. (Buckeye Beauty Block)
Stitch a 3” red and 3” tan strip RST on long side of the strips.
(Make 3)
Press toward red. Cut one strip set in half. Place one half of the strip
set RST with the opposite half making sure the two colors are opposite
one another.
Repeat this step with the other two strip sets; sub-cut the layered strip
set into (16) 3” segments. Sew all (16) sets to create (16) 4-patch
units, making sure to match intersections.
Place a 5 7/8” blue square and a 5 7/8” tan square RST. Mark
a diagonal line from one corner to the opposite corner on the tan square.
Stitch ¼” on both sides of the diagonal line. Cut square apart
on diagonal line. Press seams toward blue side. Make a total of (8) blocks.
Following the block diagram, stitch the first two units together, one 4-patch
to one 5 ½” tan square. (Make 8 pairs)
Press seam allowances towards tan square. For next step, stitch blue/tan
block to 4-patch. (Make 8 pairs)
Press seam allowances towards half square. Combine both units together,
alternating and matching intersections. (Make 8 blocks)
Assembling the Quilt Top
With RST and raw edges matched, stitch the blocks in each row. Follow the
quilt diagram layout to determine block placement in each row. Press seams
in opposite directions for each row. Pin rows together, pinning at all
intersections. Stitch the rows together to complete quilt center.
Sew inner border (tan) strips to top and bottom of pieced quilt center. Press
seams toward border. Trim off excess length.
Stitch (2) tan strips together, end to end, to get the length needed for
the side borders. Sew tan pieced strips to both sides of pieced quilt center.
Press seam toward border. Trim off excess length.
Sew middle and outer border to pieced quilt center in same manner. Sew to
the sides first. Press seams toward border. Trim off excess length. Then
sew to top and bottom of pieced quilt center. Press seams toward border.
Trim off excess length. Repeat with blue fabric for outer border. Finishing
Layer quilt top, batting and backing. Quilt as desired. Bind. For quilting
